10:55 pm - Updates on stuff and things (mostly work and MangaNEXT)
|
Yay, finally getting around to posting again.
I've been really busy as of late. Work and MangaNEXT mostly. By the way, for those who are curious, MangaNEXT will be at the Doubletree in Somerset, NJ over Halloween weekend (Oct 31 - Nov 2). We've announced our first guest, Misako Rocks! Check out MangaNEXT's website (http://www.manganext.org) for more information.
Aside from planning for MangaNEXT, I've been putting in a lot of hours at work. I've been porting 2 applications from Pascal on Windows 3.1 to C++ on Windows CE 6.0 for much of the year. For at least the past month, I've been trying to get that ported code to compile and link on CE. I finally managed to get one application to compile and link last week, so now I'm working on the second application. Then, when I'm done with that, I get to go back to the first application, and compile and link the current version which has all the work my coworkers did on the code since I started the build process. So, I'm stuck in CE Land for a while. Not the worst place to be, especially since I got the application to compile and link, but for the past several weeks it would have been more productive and less painful to bang my head against a brick wall.
Other than those two, I've done a few weekend trips. There was Otakon, the family vacation to Vermont, a trip to Ohio (for my cousin Leigh's wedding), and several trips down to my parents' place (mostly since it's on the way to see the chiropractor).
So yeah, busy couple of months, and it's just going to get busier as it gets closer to the convention.

12:06 pm - I have dates!! And a hotel!!!
|
Huzzah! I finally have the information I need to start work for my convention! It's only taken about a month (Yay for contract negotiation).
Anyway, for those who don't know, I am the con chair for MangaNEXT this year. I've known for about a month, but had to wait until the contract was finalized until I could really get started. Plus, AnimeNEXT was only two weeks ago, and since the two are run by the same pool of staff, no real work could have been done even if the contract was finalized.
So yes, I'm excited, since now I can actually start doing work for the convention I'm in charge of.
Now to just get those official announcements sent out...

6:01 pm - Series of Quick Anime Reviews
|
A lot of people ask me for information and recommendations on various anime series, since I watch so much of it. Thus, since I'm bored right now listening to VBSS (stupid Green Belt certification that the company initiative is forcing me to take) and I've wanted to write this up anyway, here's a quick review of anime series that I've finished within the past two months or so. The series are in no particular order, except the one that I felt like writing them up in.
( Cut because there are between 15 and 20 series reviewed here. )
Pretty much all of the series mentioned behind the cut can be found on my FTP.
I had fun doing this, so I'll probably post more like this, as I finish more series. I don't think many will be as long as this one, though. It took me about 3 days to finish writing this one up.

4:32 pm - Life the past couple of months...
|
Wow. It's been quite a while since I typed up anything for LJ. I've been pretty busy with anime conventions lately, especially since I'm in charge of the manga library when it travels. In the past few months, I've worked the manga library 3 times, for the 3 conventions I've been to. AnimeNEXT and Otakon were both in July, and MangaNEXT was this past weekend. I was in charge for both Otakon and MangaNEXT, and I pretty much acted as Second for AnimeNEXT, since I was one of the few people on the manga library staff who knew how to use the database.
Because of taking over this new role, I've spent a lot of time in the manga library. I didn't really leave for either Otakon or MangaNEXT. Other staff members have thought me crazy for that, but a lot of what I like to do during conventions occurs in the manga library. One of my favorite things to do during a convention is talk to AnimeNEXT staff members, and a lot of staff members come visit the manga library (half the time to hide from the rest of the con for a few moments). Sure, I can't check out dealers' room from the manga room, but I usually take breaks to go do that.
The Thursday before MangaNEXT was entirely set up. Friday was the last bit of set up, and then we worked from 11 AM to 2 AM. There really weren't many people who showed up. In fact, at most, we had 12 people looking for manga in an hour during all of Friday. Saturday was much better, which was good, since we were open from 10 AM to 2 AM. Unfortunately for one of my minions, I ended up leaving him alone in the library during the second busiest hour on Saturday (In fact, it was the second busiest hour of the weekend). Sunday was also a pretty busy day, even though we were only open from 10 AM to 3 PM. Clean up also went pretty fast, since we were done by 8 PM for the whole convention, including putting everything into the storage unit. Then it was time for dinner, followed by the staff party. Fortunately, I took off Monday morning, so I was able to stay for the "Crisis Control Meeting". I didn't leave that until after 2 AM, so it was also a good thing that we still had the hotel room for one more night. Of course, I was pretty dead during work on Monday, but it was fun.
The next convention I'm working manga library for is AnimeUSA. I've already organized who is going to that convention, and I'm waiting to hear what's up with the NY Anime Fest. I will have to start scheduling hours AnimeUSA sometime soon, once I have an idea what our hours actually are.
Other than convention work, I really haven't done too much. Regular work was mostly boring until 2 or 3 weeks ago. It was basically busy work because we didn't have an active contract. However, now it's getting sort of crazy, because we have something like 6 active contracts, all running in parallel. Next year will involve a lot of overtime, so much that I've already been authorized to take overtime next year.

11:24 pm - Yes, I still exist
|
Woo, updates!
It's been quite a while since I last updated, so I figured I might as well give notice that yes, I am alive. A lot has gone on, though most of it was me working overtime. January through the beginning of May is pretty much a blur because of all the overtime I was putting in. I had a break in May, and then put in some more overtime this week.
The biggest event of the past couple of months was my trip to Japan in May to visit deralte. I spent about a week there, and we mostly just hung out. I did a lot of reading and I managed to go through around 8 volumes of manga. There was a trip to Hagi castle town, which was cool. I had a lot of fun during the trip. It fortunately gave me a much needed break from work.
Other than that, I've been doing a lot of anime related stuff. There's been anime club, of course, and anime convention staff meetings. I'm still working the Manga Library, though I've offered to help out in other areas when I'm not working the Manga Library.
I've been playing Fate/stay night. Tohsaka Rin is still my favorite character, though I am coming to like Saber a bit more. She occasionally reminds me of Kurogane Otome from Tsuyokiss, which is the only time I'm amused by her. My opinions on Sakura have yet to change, but that probably won't happen until I get around to playing the Heaven's Feel arc. I'm still working my way through the Fate arc, though, so it will be a little while. In fact, that arc will probably be translated by the time I get around to it, since I'm already playing Tsuyokiss in Japanese.
I'm sure there were other things I wanted to add to this post, but my mind has been turned to mush by the (U)'s and (S)'s. Fortunately, there shouldn't be (U)'s and (S)'s next week. Instead, I'll probably be studying Japanese and learning more PHP. I've decided to start working on a web server that connects to my database. Right now, it only connects to my manga list, but I'm working on connecting the database, the web server, and the ftp server. It'll be fun stuff, at least.

11:12 pm - Updates!
|
Once again, it's time for my monthly update.
I've been rather busy as of late. For the past couple of weeks, I've been working overtime at work, which results in me being very tired on the weekends. As a result, I haven't really done much aside from go to work and sleep. Of course, I still go to anime club and such, but that's just because I refuse to work overtime on Tuesdays and Fridays. Seven or eight extra hours a week are not fun at all. I'm not able to be online as much due to the extra hours I'm working (stupid overdue, vaguely defined assignment). So, right now the best way to keep in contact with me is via email or this LJ.
I do manage to get in a couple episodes of anime, outside of anime club, mainly because I'm a bum on weekends. After working over 40 hours a week and not getting enough sleep, I just don't feel like doing much (and have skipped band practice because of this laziness). I'm currently making my way through Red Garden, D.Gray-man, Death Note, Code Geass, Kekkaishi, Bleach, venus Versus Virus, Nodame Cantabile, Air, and Kanon. Most of these I've been watching as they come out, so I only have an episode to watch during the week.
I've also gotten back into the habit of exercising regularly. I have a small set of exercises, including using the rowing machine I got for Christmas, I do every day. This started because I'd come to the realization that I had really missed having a regular exercise schedule after graduating college. Exercising has now become one of the few time periods during which I watch anime since it makes the rowing more interesting.
In the time since I last posted, I've had some good and bad news. The only really bad thing that happened (outside of being forced to work overtime) was my flute stopped working. The cork in the head joint became loose, and now that flute doesn't play certain notes (I think D, E, and F were all affected). However, this forced me to go ahead with something I'd been thinking about doing for a while anyway. I bought a new flute a couple weeks ago. It's a Yamaha 674H with open holes and a B foot. It has a rather nice tone and I'm quite pleased with the purchase.
The really good news that I received in the past month was that I passed the JLPT level 3. It wasn't by much, since my score was 246, and I needed a 240 to pass. However, I was just really happy to pass. For those who are curious, here's the breakdown of my score:
Writing/Vocabulary: 60 Listening: 57 Reading/Grammar: 129
I've started to study for the level 2 test. I'll take that in December, really just to see how well I can do.
.. And, I think that's about it that's happened in the past month.

2:05 am - An interesting day...
|
Tomorrow will be an interesting day. At least more interesting than most Sundays. This Sunday will pretty much plan out the rest of my week. See, I have to decide if I want and can afford to work the dealer's room for Katsucon. Normally, this would be perfectly fine. However, I'm behind schedule at work, so I kind of feel guilty asking to take the time off. I have yet to ask my boss, so I'm not sure what he'll think of the idea.
Also, I'll have to deal with Chet when I'm kind of annoyed at him. He's the one who asked me to help out at Katsucon, since they're a bit short-handed for that particular show. I agreed, assuming I would only be taking 2 days off. He later contacted me and informed me that I would need to take 3 days off. 2 days would have been manageable, but I'm not sure about 3, since I'm behind schedule. If he had told me when he first asked me to go, I would have been more hesistant to accept.
So, tomorrow I have to discuss that situation with him and see what happens. I'm sort of tempted to just say I can't do it, but I already said I'd see if I could. I also realize it's not really his fault. He's used to dealing with people whok work in his company and know the schedule for setup, so I'm pretty sure it just slipped his mind. Ah well, I'll just have to figure it out tomorrow, I suppose.
Also, I really should order my new flute tomorrow. I was waiting for the payment period to start before ordering it, since it's going to be rather expensive. Unfortunately, I have to get a new one, since my old one is not functioning properly. Because of the cork in the head joint no longer fitting properly, I have trouble staying in tune, and I think there might be some air leakage. The flute is too old to do repairs on it, since it would cost more than it was worth. Thus, I'm opting for a new flute. I'm currently borrowing the band director's until I can get the new one.

7:46 am - Quick Update
|
Since the last update, I've been pretty busy. There were, of course, the events that were mentioned in the previous post. There was also a lot of work, especially since the company gives no holidays between New Year's and Good Friday. There were a couple of outings at work, including a trip for ice cream, which made it more bearable. I will still probably need a mental health day sometime this month.
I've been socializing a bit more than usual. On top of Anime Club, Wednesday Night Anime, and band, there were a few other outings. For instance, I went out for dinner with Keith and Chet about 4 weeks ago. That was pretty nice, just being able to sit there and talk anime. Also, there was the fencing alumni match. It was fun since I got to see many people I haven't seen for a while. Also, I managed to get relatively free food out of the deal. It resulted in a lot of leftovers, which I then got to take to work for lunch. There were a few other outings, which were somewhat fun, but kind of annoying at the same time. I'll describe that in the next (friend-locked) post. (It's friend-locked more for the use of names than the situation.)
I don't have much coming up, which will allow me to play catch up on anime. I've gone through Death Note, D.Gray-man, RED GARDEN, Kanon, Venus Versus Virus, and Kyou Kara Maou recently. The one that I'm following the most would be Kanon. I think the 2006 version is much better than the old 2002 version, mainly because 2006 is able to make me cry. (For an anime based on a crying game, that's a good thing.) So far, both arc ends have made tears well up. The third arc end should be coming up this week, so I'll get to see how that affects me. D.Gray-man is the next most followed series. It's a nicely done shounen action series. I do like Death Note, but since it follows the manga so much, I already know what's going to happen. RED GARDEN is a good mystery series, but only somewhat fills the void left by Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. I'm very much so looking forward to the second season of Higurashi. Venus Versus Virus is along the lines of D.Gray-man and Bleach. It's only two episodes in, so I'm still trying to figure out how much I like it. Right now, it's okay. Would be nice if it got a bit better though. Manga seems more interesting.
I've also been reading more manga. I got in a shipment from Amazon Japan last week. For manga, I now have the 7th volume of Comic Yuri Hime, both volumes of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Onisarashi-hen, both volumes of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Himatsubushi-hen, the manga for Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's, Aoi Hana 2, and Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu manga 1. In novels, I picked up a Haruhi novel, 2 Marimite novels, and a Boogiepop novel. In addition, I also picked up Marimite Haru fan disk 3, ARIA the ANIMATION drama CD 3, and Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's drama CD 1.
Mainly, I've been reading Yuri Hime. I only have one story left in that volume to read through, which is Sakura Hime Hana Fubuki by Morishima Akiko. For the most part, I really liked this volume. Many of the continuing stories had good revelations and arcs were ended well. (Though, Tokimeki Mononoke Jogakuen was a rather odd story.) For the one shots, some were bland, but there were some that were rather good. I'm already looking forward to the next volume, even though that won't be out until April. Of course, it does help that my two favorite mangaka (Hayashiya Shizuru and Fujieda Miyabi) write stories for this publication, continuing stories at that. Hayashiya Shizuru's Strawberry Shake Sweet and Fujieda Miyabi's Ameiro Kouchakan Kandan are both rather amusing and I'm looking forward to their next installments. Once I'm done with I'm either going to move on to one of the manga I picked up, or I might look at one of the previous issues of Yuri Hime, since there were some stories I didn't really read when I got the volumes, and now kind of do (for example, the Mermaid Line series).
Aside from all that, the only other thing I've been doing is playing Tsuyokiss. It's fun, and really does help with my Japanese. Plus, Otome-san is rather cute when not beating up on the player character, Leo. Not that he doesn't deserve it, because he does. Of course, I'm still in the prologue, so everything that's being done is scripted. I've only gotten through the first week, so it's only been an introduction to the characters. So far, Leo has mostly interacted with Otome-san, but that's because she just moved in. Hopefully I'll finish the prologue sometime soon and will interact with some of the other characters more, especially Hime and Nagomi. However, probably won't interact too much with Nagomi, just because of her character. Hime and Leo are in the same class, though, so at least I'll be seeing her there. Either way, I'm having fun, so it's all good.

12:40 am - Updates
|
Well, there's been quite a bit that's happened since the last time that I posted. It's only been about 3.5 months, so I've had time for a few things. The past month has been especially busy.
September was relatively quiet. Had the usual chiropractor appointment, and work wasn't too busy since I was between projects. I decided to take the level 3 of the JLPT, and started cramming for that. Picked up a few books in October to help me with that, along with books that I picked up earlier in the year.
October had MangaNEXT. That went pretty well, especially for being a first year con that was fairly original in concept. It was set up something like Comiket, but with a lot of elements from an anime convention. I worked really long hours that weekend. Set up was at 8:30 AM on the Friday, and I didn't leave the con until 1 AM that day. Saturday, I came in at 11:00, and I didn't leave until 2 AM. Sunday was the last, and shortest day. I was there from 9 AM to around 3 or 4 PM. I then went back to the apartment, and slept. I was very glad to have taken the following Monday off.
I didn't actually do much at MangaNEXT aside from work the manga room. I was in the dealer's room for a while and I BS'ed with AnimeNEXT staff members and their friends/co-workers. I kind of wanted to check out Artist's Alley and the game room, but I just never made it that far. Oh well.

2:17 am - The past couple of months...
|
Well, it's been over two months since I last posted. I've actually been pretty busy the past couple months, so I either didn't have the time or the motivation to actually post. In addition, I haven't really been online much outside of work.
Since I last posted, I went to 2 anime conventions (and staffed at both), made plans to go to 2 more anime conventions, visited sylk, saw Snakes on a Plane, went to 2 staff meetings for AnimeNEXT, and did the usual stuff. The usual stuff includes work, Wednesday night gatherings, anime club, and visiting my parents after I going to see the chiropractor. There's been a lot of running around on weekends, so I've been just crashing whenever I get the chance. Like this past weekend. I didn't do much of anything this past weekend, aside from marathon One Piece. I went through over 50 episodes.
Note: Cut for length.
( AnimeNEXT )
After AnimeNEXT came a week of work and then a trip to the chiropractor plus a visit with my parents. It was a decently easy going week, and that weekend was the only weekend where I visited the chiropractor but didn't have an AnimeNEXT staff meeting. The following week was a pretty busy one at work, since we had the customer come up and the product being displayed was one that I was working on. I basically spent that entire week in the lab, dealing with the customer.
After that, I did something to my back, so I ended up having to go to the chiropractor twice in a week. And, in between those visits, was an AnimeNEXT staff meeting. Oh, the joys of sitting through a long staff meeting, as well as a work day, with an injured back. Fortunately, that was taken care of, so I was able to do more stuff.
The next big event that happened was at the end of July, when I went to visit sylk. We pretty much just hung out for the weekend. We read some manga, watched a lot of Sailor Moon, and I helped her with Japanese. It was nice to not be doing anything, since work had me doing a lot of boring stuff that kept me pretty busy. Then came Otakon.
( Otakon )
Following Otakon was another trip to the chiropractor, and another AnimeNEXT staff meeting. This meeting was a lot shorter because we didn't go around the room getting impressions about the 2006 convention from everyone attending.
Finally, last Thursday, a group of my friends and I went to see Snakes on a Plane. It was amusing, and definitely a group film. We were kind of crazy, since it was a work night and we saw a 10 PM showing of the film. After that, we went out to a diner, so I didn't get to sleep until around 2 that night. Yay 4 hours of sleep before going to work. We managed to come up with an interesting take on the movie, which one of my friends posted to his website.
Now, I don't have many things coming up in the near future, though there are several things that I'm doing near the end of the year. First up would be MangaNEXT. This is the first year this convention is running, and like with AnimeNEXT and Otakon, I'll be working the Manga Room. That'll be Columbus Day weekend. Then, the weekend before Thanksgiving will be AnimeUSA in VA. I'll be working the Manga Room there as well. Fortunately, I already know the manga room way too well, since I helped set up the database and staffed the Manga room twice. The only things I'll have to work on memorizing are the newer titles in our collection. It's kinda sad that for most titles, I don't have to check the database to see if they are part of our collection. Oh well, makes my job easier.
After that, the only definite things in plans are Japanese classes for the Fall semester and the JLPT in December. Right now I'm scheduled to take the level 4 of the JLPT, but I'm thinking of trying the level 3. JLPT level 4 is much too easy for me. I already passed the practice exam (last year's level 4 test) with something like a 73%. Not stellar, but still passing. Thinking on it now, after having talked with deralte, spending the next 3 months getting that last 27%, and then doing some extra towards the level 3 seems kinda silly. However, I'm not sure if I have the time to cram in the stuff needed for level 3. I probably know about 1/3 of the stuff for level 3. Oh well, I have until October 6 to decide, so we'll see how much studying I do in the next month.
Anyway, I think this post is long enough. I still have a bit more to talk about, but I'll put that in a post for another day.

7:10 pm - Whee, I'm bored!
|
Tadaima!
Also, I don't feel like waiting a couple of months to write a new entry.
Not much has happened since my last entry. My birthday was a few days ago. I got a lot of free food on my birthday. I also was sung to in Japanese, since my Japanese class was on my birthday. The song was kinda silly, since it was just 'Happy Birthday' in Japanese. The day was fun, though.
My go set arrived over a week ago, as has most of the JLPT stuff that I ordered. Still waiting on one book, but that should arrive sometime soon. I am now planning to buy some go books, but that might wait a week or so, until my credit period ends, due to how much stuff I've bought in the past month already. I am quite pleased with what I have already purchased, though.
The most interesting thing that happened recently would be that I had my first flat tire today. I wasn't too surprised by it, since I think I got the puncture last night while going out to dinner, but it did prevent me from going to the staff meeting I was supposed to attend. Oh well. A police officer who was in the area showed up while I was debating whether I should attempt to cross the road to change the tire or call people first. He helped me change the tire, and then I drove back to the parents' place. I was only 10 minutes away, so it would have been silly to drive the rest of the way to my apartment and then take care of replacing the tire.
Anime club is now Thursday nights, so I now have a fun and stress-filled week, just due to scheduling. If I didn't have to show up to work to be paid, it would be so much easier. Unfortunately, I have to show up to work and do nothing there, as opposed to doing nothing at the apartment, to be paid. Japanese class and anime club take up 3 nights a week, so I only get two days to rest in.
Nothing really new on the anime front. I haven't added any new series to my watching list, nor have I dropped any series. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni still top my list as favorites.
Oyasumi! (Darn having to get up for work.)
Itte kimasu!
PS - If this doesn't seem very coherent (or less coherent than usual), that would be because I wrote this while buzzed. Unfortunately, they don't have a mood icon for that one.

9:29 pm - Times flies and stuff
|
Tadaima!
Well, it's been about three months now. Since I actually have time right now, I figured I might as well post something. A lot has gone on in the past couple of months, and I still have quite a bit more coming up. Concert band is over. That ended at the end of April, and the concert went pretty well. I have fun at least, so it was good. Anime club ended for the semester, but will start back up in June. Since the second semester is over, I don't have any fencing alumni things to do. However, I have started my Japanese class, which will run to the end of June. Class is twice a week, and it mostly covers conversational stuff, so it works out well for me. I'm also preparing for the JLPT level 4 test, which will occur in December. I have a few kanji that I need to memorize before then, but it doesn't look to be that bad.
Work has been going well. My assignment is currently way ahead of schedule, so I end up reading a lot of political/news blogs, go blogs, and anime blogs. Got myself addicted to some new anime as a result. Also, convinced myself to buy a go set with a goban and goishi. I'm waiting for that to arrive, which will hopefully be sometime this week. Also waiting on some study stuff for Japanese.
Aside from that, I've been watching a lot of anime. I usually watch an ep before going to work, and it's usually a different series every day. My current top series are probably Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (with the Na of Naku colored red). I'm also following Strawberry Panic, Simoun, Princess Princess, xxxHOLiC, Joshi Kousei, Ouran Koukou Host Club, and ARIA the NATURAL. The only one of the above that I'm not watching as it comes out is Joshi Kousei. In addition to following these series, I'm finishing up watching Gokujou Seitokai and Ueki no Housoku. Then, maybe I'll get around to finishing watching Mai Otome. Maybe.
I'm also anticipating a couple of series. One is the Maria-sama ga Miteru OVA. That, I believe, is going to be coming out closer to the end of the year. The other is the live action version of Princess Princess. It should be interesting at least, since I'm not quite sure how well it will work out. I mean, making male anime and manga characters look female is not as difficult as making real guys look female. Hopefully, the crossdressing that results will be amusing, and not scary. Though scary could be interesting in its own way.
Anyway, I'll be busy the next couple of weekends. AnimeNext is coming up, so I'm getting prepared for that. Plus, weekends are my only time to really sleep in, especially since 9/80 started. 6 AM wake ups are not that much fun. But, at least I get every other Friday off, even if I am running from 6 AM until 9 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Itte kimasu!

12:07 am - Not-so-quick update on the last month or so
|
Tadaima!
I've been meaning to type this up for a while, but the opportunity didn't present itself until today. I've been busy with work and extracurricular stuff that I just haven't had time to really play around on the computer. Sure, I get in enough time to set up torrents and occasionally watch an ep of anime, but not much time to do anything else, which includes working on the database of my anime and manga collections.
Anyway, first things first. The most interesting thing that I'm currently involved in is AnimeNEXT. It's a con that I'll be staffing in June this year. I'll be in the Manga Room. It looks like it'll be fun stuff. I've already helped catalog the manga that the con already owns. There is a surprising amount of boy's love mixed in the collection. There's not too much yuri, but it's not surprising that we have it, since there's a pretty good relationship between Yuricon and AnimeNEXT. At least, to my knowledge, there is. Plus, they're both New Jersey conventions. Obviously, most of the manga is in the style of what's been selling, such as Full Metal Panic, Initial D, Inuyasha, etc. There's also quite of bit of shoujo, such as Utena, and several other titles that I can't think of right now. We've got a pretty decent collection, but I was surprised by the amount of boy's love available.
The next most important news item in my life is that I've sold my soul to Amazon Japan and Book Off. Within the past month from Amazon Japan, I've received Yuri Shimai 3-5, Yuri Hime 1-3, Hayate x Blade 1-2, Boogiepop 2, Boogiepop Dual 1, Boogiepop Returns vs Imaginator, Maria-sama ga Miteru novel 1, Ichigo Marshmellow 1 and Iono-sama Fanatics 1. That's just the printed material that I've received. I've also gotten Maria-sama ga Miteru drama CDs 1-2 and 5-6, the Kannazuki no Miko drama CD, the two Mai-HiME drama CDs, and Koi Shimai drama CD 2. Plus, I'm waiting for another shipment from Amazon Japan to be sent out. I don't even want to go into what I've gotten from Book Off, since that's where most of my manga collection and my Japanese CD collection came from.
Let's see, anything else interesting? Well, still going to anime club twice a week. One of those nights is currently a game night, but it's still fun. Also, I've started going to concert band over at Stevens. It's only once a week, but it gets me back into playing the flute. I haven't really played in about 4 years, so I'll have to go through my scales again and relearn some fingerings, but that's alright. Monday night was my first night with the concert band and it was fun, so I'll be going back.
I also went to see the fencing team on Sunday. That was fun, and I'm glad I got to see some of the matches. I definitely want to be more involved next year because I do miss it quite a bit, even with the hectic schedule it brought with it. The team did really well this year, which I was glad to hear. I went to karate this weekend as well. That was also fun, since it's another thing that I miss doing. Sensei Dave is trying to help me set up a class near where I live that I could teach. I gave him all the information last weekend, so hopefully it will work out well.
The other fun stuff that I've been busy with have been the new animes that have been released. I've been collecting Fate/Stay Night, Kagihime Eikyuu Alice Rondo, Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~, Rakugo Tennyo Oyui, Lemon Angel Project, and Papillon Rose New Season, in addition to the series I was already collecting, such as Monster, Bleach, Gakuen Alice, etc. I'm also waiting for the Maria-sama ga Miteru OVA to come out. I'm scared the most by the fact that I'm downloading Papillon Rose, and watching it. It is complete crap, which is why I like it. It's a parody of Sailormoon, Cutie Honey, and Utena, among other series. It's rather ecchi, and it's one of those things I really shouldn't enjoy watching, along with Kannazuki no Miko and Kekkou Kamen. Oh well, I suppose it just gets added to my list of crappy things that I like.
Other than that, life's pretty much been just work and sleep.

5:01 pm - I'm no longer a caged hamster!
|
Tadaima!
Well, the first week of work for the new year has ended, and unfortunately, the second week is about to begin. This week, I'll have to finish up my portion of my evaluation for last year. That won't be fun. Oh well, at least I get paid this week. Other than that, I'll probably be scrounging around for work to do, since I'm almost done with the coding that I am able to do for the STE. I'll have to bother systems for the signals so that I can finish up the detailed design and the coding for the section I'm working on. I should also talk to my boss about the message catalogue, since I need a new SCR for that, and my code won't run without it. That'll give me some more work to do.
Not much else has been going on aside from work. Mostly, I've been playing around with the computer. It's been fun stuff like setting up a new printer and trying to install new DVD software. Stupid depencies that take too long to install, mainly because there are so many of them. Ah well, once I get it working, it should be a good DVD player.
Oh, and what I mean by the title is that I can now enter and leave the area where my cube is whenever I want. I got a new employee ID on Tuesday, and am now free to come and go as I please. It really makes things so much easier, since I don't have to call coworkers to have them open the door for me or wait for friends to show up so that I can go to lunch. Why a hamster? Well, we actually started out with a dog, since it's an animal that can be kept indoors, but requires human aid to get things like food and water. However, I had access to the magic water machine, also known as a water cooler, which dispenses water when a button is pushed. Thus, my situation was more like that of a caged rodent, such as a hamster. The only difference was I had to go outside my area to use a restroom. So it was actually more like a combination between a dog and a hamster, but we just stuck with hamster. It was a description that worked well enough.
I've been watching a bit of anime too. I've now seen through episode 91 of One Piece, and I've watched the subtitled version of the new Kaleido Star OVA, Legend of Phoenix. I've also seen the first two episodes of live action version of Ace wo Nerae. I'm looking forward to seeing the 3 episode of that, once it finishes downloading. Eventually, I'll get around to watching 20-22 of Gokujou Seitokai and Mai Otome 10-13. And, of course, finishing what I have of One Piece and such.

6:37 pm - A glorious week, or something like that...
|
Tadaima!
Well, this past week was just *fantastic*. At least the work part of the week was. I mean, what could be better than losing an ID badge? Especially during the week when half the company is on vacation, including the person I need to talk to about getting a new badge. Granted, someone else was put in charge of providing replacement badges, so I went and talked to her. Turns out the badge making machine wasn't functioning properly, so I spent most of the week using a temporary employee ID badge.
Now, for those who don't know what sort of company I work for, this might not seem all that bad. However, I work for a defense contractor. The work that I do tends to be classified. I need my badge just to get to the parking lot. Granted, a temporary employee ID allows me access to the parking lot, as well as in and out of the building.
However, a temporary employee ID does not allow access to the secure areas in the building. And, guess what? My cubicle happens to be in one of those secure areas. Every time I want to get in or out of the building, I needed to ask one of my coworkers to open the door for me. Also, temporary IDs are only good for one day, so I couldn't even use the same ID over the three days that I needed it. Thus, I had to ask security to let me in and out of the parking lot and the building. It sucked, royally. And I still have one more day of that, at least, since I won't have a badge when I go back to work after the break. Hopefully, the badge making machine will be working properly again, but I'm not sure how many people will be in over the break. No matter what, I'll have to contact security on Jan 3, to find out what's up with the replacement badge.
Other than that, this past week has been pretty good. Monday was good, especially since I got to talk to havenward. Tuesday was bad, since that was the day I lost my badge. I spent lots of quality time with my car though. (I tore apart the car to see if my badge was somewhere in there. It wasn't.) Also spent a good portion of Tuesday hunting through the apartment looking for the badge. Wednesday was alright, but that's because we had anime club over at Ryan's place after work. Watching Full Metal Alchemist and playing Dreamcast games is definitely a good way to make a day better. Thursday was also alright. It was a lazy day at work, I watched more One Piece after work, and then went over to Ryan and Liz's place to hang out and play board games. Stayed there rather late, which was okay since we didn't have work on Friday. Friday was good since I didn't have work, so I just slept in late, watched One Piece, and cleaned up the apartment a bit before heading to my parents' place. Now I'm at the parent's place, and enjoying not really having work to do. Will have to watch more One Piece at some point. I'm almost done with Sanji's arc.
Not much else is going on. The only real plans I have for the next couple days are watch more One Piece and get rid of some of the stress of losing my employee ID badge. It really is annoying, and I'm just going to try to ignore the fact that it happened.

3:08 am - Anime, manga, blowing stuff up, and vacation!
|
Tadaima!
Well, it's been another month since I last updated. Not much new to tell people. There were some computer problems for a while, but those problems have been resolved. It required a reinstallation of my OS, but that's alright. I had just enough space to back up everything important, so it worked out well. Now, to just wait until I bork my computer again. Also, have to finish reinstalling all the programs that I like to use, like Stepmania and OpenOffice. Fortunately, I already have most of the programs that I use regularly installed, so the comp does most of what I want it to. Which reminds me, I should remember to get PostgreSQL. I'm in the mood to play around with databases.
No real new obsessions to talk about. Still maintaining the old ones, though. For example, I'm regularly checking for information on Takarazuka. I'm still keeping up with anime news. I must say that this season's offerings are the best I've seen all year. Also, some of next year's offerings look to be quite promising. I'm currently enjoying Mai Otome, Blood+, Black Cat, Aria, Jigoku Shoujo, and Solty Rei. I look forward to a couple of anime that will be coming out sometime in the relatively near future, including the third season of Maria-sama ga Miteru, Fate/Stay Night, and the new OVA for Kaleido Star. Not really much else to say, though, since I haven't had all that much time to watch the anime that I've been collecting. Hopefully, with the four day weekend coming up, I'll be able to watch some of the stuff I've been downloading lately.
As far as manga goes, I'm still collecting many, many series. Lately, I've been reading the scans of Gantz. Finished up to volume 12 of that, so only have 6 or 7 more volumes to go before I'm caught up. Will definitely do that this weekend. Also, I'm reading Maria-sama ga Miteru (manga) volume 4. I'm more than a quarter of the way through that, and am looking forward to the release of the next volume. Really need to start getting the drama CDs for this series. Actually, there are way too many drama CDs that I need to get. Ah well, one of these days I'll place an order for that stuff. The other manga that I'm currently reading is Maze volume 2. It's not too difficult of a read, even if it is one of the adult titles that I read. In fact, it tends to be easier to read than Maria-sama ga Miteru. Probably because it's more of an action series, as opposed to the drama-fest that is Maria-sama ga Miteru.
Other than that, not much has been going on. I mean, I still go to anime club on Wednesdays and Fridays. Granted, our Wednesdays have become more of a Dreamcast day than anything else. Not that I'm complaining. I thoroughly enjoy playing video games where the goal is to blow things up. I highly recommend the game Bomber He-he. It's a Dreamcast game in which you work for a demolition company, so you get to blow up lots of buildings. Some are highly amusing, like blowing up the glass statue of the old man with a brief case, and the Kitagawa building (I think that's the name of the first building you get to blow up, where you're able to launch vending machines [Afro Drink!] and book cases). Others are kind of frustrating (darn you, meteor or moon or whatever celestial body you happen to be!). Still, it's a very good game that we've been playing the past two weeks.
One more thing before I go. For any who are curious, here's my list of holidays for the rest of the year: November 24 and 25 (yay for 4 day Thanksgiving breaks!) December 23 - January 2 (yay for week long Christmas breaks!)
I'm not planning on taking any full days off. I may have to take a half day at some point, but that's about it for the rest of the year.
Now, off to bed since I do have work in the morning.

1:41 am - Takarazuka!
|
Tadaima!
Wow. It's been over two months since I last posted. I kept meaning to do another post, but just never got around to it. Now that I am obsessing over Takarazuka, I figured I might as well post. Of course, this post will mainly be about Takarazuka and the Tsukigumi production of Elisabeth, since I've become such a fangirl and that is the only production of theirs that I have seen. It was an absolutely gorgeous production that I desperately want to see again. As a result, I now get to go through the interesting process of trying to purchase it through a buying service. Only certain websites are able to sell Takarazuka merchandise, and all of the websites only sell within Japan, so that results in a complicated process to buy stuff.
For those who don't know, Takarazuka is a style of Japanese theater. All the performers are female, and each show is divided into two parts. The first is a musical and the second is a Vegas-style revue. The musical is the main billing for the show, and the lead characters are played by the "top stars", who are the otokoyaku and musumeyaku who have been with the troupe the longest and show the necessary levels of skill in performing. (Otokoyaku are the women who play men, and musumeyaku are the women who play women.) The length of the revue is determined by the length of the musical. For example, the revue attached to Elisabeth is short (about 30 minutes) because Elisabeth is around 2.5 hours.
There are six troupes that make up the Takarazuka. Only five of these troupes perform as a troupe. The five that perform as a troupe are Hanagumi (Flower Troupe), Tsukigumi (Moon Troupe), Yukigumi (Snow Troupe), Hoshigumi (Star Troupe), and Soragumi (Cosmos Troupe). The sixth troupe, Senka (Special Course), is a special troupe whose members perform in the productions of other troupes. Older actresses (around the age of 40) who wish to continue performing with the Takarazuka are members of this troupe.
For more information on the Takarazuka, you can visit this webpage: http://takarazuka.sugarandspicecosplay.com. It's one of the few sites in English that provide details about the Takarazuka.
The production that I saw, the Tsukigumi version of Elisabeth, was performed in February/March at the Takarazuka Grand Theater. It was also performed in April/May at the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater. This was the fifth version of Elisabeth. All five of the performing troupes have performed a version of Elisabeth. Of course, I can't comment on any of the other versions since I've only seen the Tsukigumi version.
The costumes were gorgeous, and the performance was very entertaining. I loved Saeko (Ayaki Nao) as Der Tod. Kiri (Kiriya Hiromu) made for an amusing Luigi Luccini. Asako (Sena Jun) was a good Elisabeth, though Elisabeth was not my favorite character. Der Tod and Luigi both held that spot. Der Tod was just great. (This will probably be one of my favorite versions of Elisabeth because of how Der Tod was played. Typically, he is played as a male character, but in this version, he was performed as a more androgynous character.) Definitely would have picked Der Tod over Franz Josef. Luigi was highly amusing because of his antics. He wasn't the comedy relief, or any sort of comical character. He was just so amusing because he was the sort of character who was always scheming.
The entire performance was in Japanese, with no subtitles. Even so, it was pretty easy to follow the story because of all the visual cues. Granted, I was able to pick up some of the dialogue, but I'd still recommend this to people who don't understand a word of Japanese. It's not necessary to understand the story, and I went in not knowing anything about the story. I feel that the actresses really did perform well enough so that even if you went into the performance not knowing anything about the story or knowing any Japanese, you'd still have a good idea as to what the story was about. Sure, it's useful having someone (or at least an online synopsis) around to provide a basic background to the story, but it wasn't something that I felt was necessary.
For an idea as to what the production was like, here's the stage graph: http://www.sankei.co.jp/enak/sumirestyle/2005/apr/kiji/elisabeth/00.html. (The stage graph is pretty much a summarized version of the story with pictures from the production.) And, if you want a summary of the story that is in English, you can go to http://www.theatre-musical.com/elisabeth/synopsis.html. That synopsis is based on the original musical performed in Vienna, so there might be some differences between that synopsis and the Japanese version, but they're not different enough to matter.
So yeah, there's a pretty good desciption of my current obsession. Not quite sure how long it will remain an obsession, but at least I developed another expensive hobby. Also, it's teaching me great facts that history books, for some unknown reason, leave out. For example, the reason the Habsburg empire fell (and WWI occurred) was Death fell in love with a girl. And sure, Elisabeth was crazy, but wouldn't you be if Death fell in love with you and started trying to seduce you? Plus, that fall on her head which resulted in her first meeting with Death didn't help matters any. It just makes so much more sense this way.
Anyway, time for bed. Oyasumi!

Tadaima!
Well, today is my last day of official work for the week. Tomorrow, I just come in for paid overtime. Why? Certainly because I have a pressing project or anything like that. No, instead it's just because my boss offered it to me. So, I'm coming in tomorrow for 4 hours overtime, and I'll try to get some lab work done or something. Right now, I'm just watching some code compile. It should work, since it's worked all the other times I've compiled it. And, wow, that was one of the fastest compiles I've ever seen for this program. I was expecting 20-30 minutes of watching it compile.
Anyway, today has actually gone by pretty quickly. I've done a couple of compiles, surfed the web, did some accounting stuff. You know, usual day at the office when you don't really have much to do. Fortunately, I've been give the go-ahead for the work that I've been planning on doing, so it gives me a bit more to do than just sit and wait. It is so much easier to get things done when you have some guidance.
I have to say that I am highly amused by my coworkers. They're kind of crazy. During the work day, it's not unusual to hear things such as renditions of various half-forgotten songs like Three Blind Mice. Also, I have already been scolded by a coworker for not being social enough during the office hours. I was told that I was too quiet, and needed to come out of my cube and 'shoot the breeze' more. And today I was told that I need to pick up a hawaiian shirt. Well, actually I was told that since I was new, it was forgivable for me to not be wearing a hawaiian shirt today. (For those who don't know, Thursday is Hawaiian Shirt Day for the people who work on my project.)
Anime club was anime club. We finished watching the first arc of Mai-HiME and are working our way through the second arc. I'm certainly looking forward to some of the upcoming episodes, though I'm not sure how the rest of the group is taking the switch between the arcs. I like elements from both arcs, but will have to actually see more of the second arc to decide which storyline I like better. Past couple of episodes, I liked how the story was told, but the story focused on Mai and Tate, and I really don't care all that much about them. So, I'll just have to wait until the story moves past this section, and into the section that I want to see.
Hmm, I don't think there is anything else interesting going on. I mean, I don't think anybody wants to hear about my finances, as thrilling as they are. That is what I spent most of the day working on. Balancing rent, loans, etc. is always fun. And I really have to remember to close out a bank account tomorrow.

4:53 pm - meh...
|
Tadaima!
Boy, do I wish I was home right now. Work can be boring when you really don't have any assignments to do. I've already gone through my 'work-friendly' sites, so now I'm just kind of sitting here. I have to wait one more release before I can do any more work with my current assignment, so I don't really have much to do. I'm currently just working on test variants that I hope will work out the way that they are supposed to. Yay for playing with the testing equipment.
In other news, my first assignment has been officially released. It only took them 4 days to get around to it. In addition, one of the releases that I was waiting for has been officially released, so that means there's just one more to go. Hopefully, it will move somewhat quickly, considering how long it's been worked on.
Since today is Wednesday, tonight is anime club night. Woo for anime! We're watching Mai-HiME currently, and hopefully I'm not too tired by the time we get around to watching it. Definitely no Daily Show for me tonight, though. I'm probably just going to pass out right after club instead.
I have no other plans for the week, other than Friday night anime club and a couple trips to Mitsuwa. Friday will be watching Big O, with its awesome theme song, and then I'll be staying overnight at a friend's place. This way, I can get up early (which actually won't be early for me), and a group of us can make the first trip to Mitsuwa. We get to come back, hang out a while, and make a second trip to Mitsuwa for a summer festival thinger. It should be interesting, especially since they have nice sales going on. Fortunately, I do actually have some money to spend. I just really shouldn't spend as much as I did last weekend.
Last weekend was a fun trip into the city. My next trip there will probably be a necessary one, but the next planned one won't be until the end of the month. I spent the day going through the various manga shops, plus looking at some of the clothing stores. Let me just say, women's business fashion sucks. The clothes are absolutely horrid, and I wouldn't want to be caught dead in at least 90% of the stuff available. I'm ever so tempted to just start shopping in the men's section. Their clothes are so much better. I mean, really, why is it so hard to find a decent pair of slacks, a button down short-sleeved shirt, or a polo shirt in the women's section?
But, enough of the ranting. At least I managed to buy several volumes of manga that I wanted (which included me finishing off Kanon, Kannazuki no Miko, and finishing off the first 20 volumes of Hikaru no Go). I also picked up three new CDs for myself. I got KOTOKO - Hane, B'z - Loose, and B'z - Risky. Now, I just need to eventually pick up a region free DVD player, since my KOTOKO CD came with a region 2 DVD. In addition to making me want a region free DVD player, the Hane CD also made me want to pick up KOTOKO's Re-sublimity single, which I did. Interestingly enough, that also has a region 2 DVD.
So, yeah, I've done a few interesting things lately, and I have a few more interesting things coming up, but life mostly revolves around work now, and my boredom resulting from lack of things to do while at work. Yes, I know this will eventually change, but right now I just don't have much to do.

3:59 pm - Work + random things that I felt like mentioning/need to remember
|
Tadaima!
I'm at work, yet again. I'm kind of bored right now, since the next project that I need to work on is based on a project that has yet to be released. I get to do unofficial tests tomorrow, when most of the group is out. I have to wait for the release before I can do official tests, though. Ah well, it will get most of my paperwork done early, which will hopefully get my stuff released faster. It'll be useful since I'm the third of five updates for the same set of files. Because of this, though, I get to pretend I haven't worked on files that I have worked on, which results in unofficial test sets and such. It also means a lack of work for me.
Today's mostly been a day of me pretending to do work. However, I did get my paycheck, which is a nice thing, especially since I received my bonus along with it. I must say that I like direct deposit already, since I now don't have to go to the bank to deposit my paycheck. It's already been done for me. Now, if only the deposit would go through so that the money was actually available.
Not much else has been going on. I should be ordering my new computer soon. (Well, actually that should be my brother should be ordering my new computer soon, but whatever.) Still going to anime club on Fridays, but will be skipping out on Otakon this year, unlike several anime club members. Will instead be going to OnnaFest in October, which reminds me that I need to send in the payment for that sometime soon, and I should check to see what time I need to take off for that.
I did something unusual for lunch today. Since one of my co-workers (a contractor not on my project) is leaving to go back to teaching until next summer, we had a good-bye lunch. I haven't known him that long, but he's an amusing guy, and I look forward to seeing him again next summer. Which reminds me that I should eventually respond to that e-vite about Wine Festival in September. It might be something interesting to do, and who knows, maybe I'll find a wine that I like. Maybe.
Aside from my obsession with various animes (none of which are from this season), I can't say that I've really be paying attention to most stuff. I watch my anime and the Daily Show, I sleep when I find that time, and I spend many hours at work, often reading Slashdot when nothing else is going on. Too bad there was a meeting today. I've had a meeting every other day this week. I won't have one tomorrow, so one today might have been nice. It would have given me something to do for an hour, at least.
It's going to be so weird tomorrow, since nobody will be around, really. Sure, there will be a contractor here and there, but most of the company has off. In fact, I only know of 9 people other than myself who will be in tomorrow. I know there are more, but it's still going to be weird. Another thing that's weird is I have the option to take overtime next week. Joe, my boss, called me today to say that I can take four hours overtime to "make-up" for the four hours of PTO that I had to use last week. I'm seriously considering it, since it means more money. Sure, it probably means that I'd be coming in on my day off, but how often do you get told that you can take overtime? He offered it to me because he felt bad that, since he didn't tell me about payroll's regulations, I had to use 4 hours of PTO. I'm not quite sure what I'll do during those 4 hours, but I'm still thinking about taking it.
So, yeah. Work is going along alright, though I'd be more interested if I had more stuff to do. I'm not doing all that much outside of work, mostly because I don't have time to. Though, I am going into the city this weekend to go manga shopping. I haven't done that in a long time, and I need to. I'm waiting on my book/DVD shelves before I go anime shopping though. Also, need to remember to bother otousan about getting some plastic rods. Have to go close down a bank account as well. Still working on finishing unpacking. I'll finish that up at some point.
::sighs:: I suppose I'll go spend my last hour here trying to figure out what I want to call my new computer. Don't feel like calling AmEx, so I'll put that off until tomorrow.
